Q: What do you do in your other lives?
A: I am an account manager working for a large multinational company. Lisa is an entrepreneur at heart and is focusing a lot of her attention on the Dogster.com blog.
Q: How old is Bo now? How is he doing?
A: Bo is clearly in bonus time. He’s getting a little shy about telling folks how old he is (let’s just say he’s had some work done…and don’t even think to mention that you think he’s coloring his hair.) Let’s just say he’s in his late teens.
He’s clearly slowed down but still loyally watches me work in my office everyday. Fortunately I work from home because Bo hates the traffic here.
Q: What kind of feedback do you get from the dog community?
A: The response has been overwhelmingly positive.
We’ve expanded our blogging efforts to include writing Dogster.com’s For the Love of Dog Blog. My wife Lisa masterminds that effort, marshaling the appropriate resources, running the contests and interacting with the readers. The feedback from the community there is tremendous. It has so many knowledgeable people who really care, and they’re a blast to interact with.
Q: What drives you nuts about the dog community?
A: Overall, the dog community is fabulous. However, when you start to learn of the negative sides of the pet industry, it can make you lose faith in humanity. The never ending stories of abuse can bring you down.
Some days we can’t even open up some of the emails based on their titles because we just can’t take one more bad story. It’s made us decide that we’ll try to save dogs one at a time.
It’s akin to the point Bo likes to make. “How do you eat 25 lb Thanksgiving turkey? One bite at a time. Any quicker and you’ll choke on a bone and die. In the meantime, feel free to swallow the sweet potatoes whole.”
Q: Has there been an issue you feel close to or one you’ve had an impact on?
A: I hope, through the Dogster blog, we’ve been able to help raise the awareness of some of the shady and seedy practices that go on.
It amazes and humbles me to know there are so many wonderful people out there doing selfless things to help animals, and expect nothing in return. That’s why Bo dedicated his book to them.
Q: How is the dogster blog different from Bo’s blog?
A: Dogster is a place where get to do the serious side of the animal world. There’s fun and lighthearted stuff too, but it’s our chance to get the word out about things like puppy mills, kill shelters, breed specific legislation, etc…
Q: What have you learned from your readers?
A: That everybody has wonderful, funny and touching stories about the relationship between pet and owner. These are the most caring people in the world. When they read Bad to the Bone, people will be able to relate to many of the stories Bo shares.
Q: Have you written other books or blogs? You’re really funny and it’s hard to imagine that being much use in corporate America.
A: No, this is my first foray into the writing world. It just goes to show anybody can do it. Even a dog’s owner.
